Evacuate - Day 19

Growing up in Michigan, we'd seen the news reports about hurricanes, but probably never really understood what a storm of such size (wind and rain and surge) can do to an area.  For over 10 years we've seen signs in Myrtle Beach for evacuation routes and finally now we've made sense of them.

I woke up early today with a mission... clean up, pack up and get out.  We hope to leave the beach by noon today so there is much to be done.

As we finished up the inside, we worked on bringing the patio furniture in noticed how different the Margate looks.  The patios are cleared, pool furniture was moved into the pool and guests are gone.

Now that Scott has joined us, there's not enough space in our vehicle to bring all of our belongings so we had to prioritize what to bring and what to leave behind.  The kids got very nervous that we were leaving them for good and we had to assure them that our intentions are to return.

It took us about 4 hours with a stop for lunch to arrive at the Adema's home.  Its the first time we've visited their home on Happy Lane.  We are excited to see their lives here in Raleigh and they have been wonderful in accommodating us.  We have two bedrooms for Sammy and us and a shared bath on the 2nd floor.  Then Tyler has his own space and bathroom on the 3rd floor.

As soon as we arrived, we headed over to their church to meet the staff and see their community garden.  Then we ran back to the house to get unpacked.

We spent the evening working in the kitchen and playing games.  Rog grilled a pork butt while Gretchen made the rest of the meal, including rice, carrots, and non.  It was a fabulous meal.

We got the kids settled in bed and then headed there ourselves around 11:00 pm.
